The concept that quality care should exist in the medical profession goes back to the early 1900's when it began with use of a Medical Care Audit in America. This turned into the "Hospital Standardization Program '' in 1918, later converted to present-day standards of Quality Assurance activities whose aim is effective and appropriate patient treatment. As a result, in 1960 the "Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals'' was established. Eighteen years later it became known as the Joint Commission on Accreditation of HealthCare Organizations.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), based in Geneva, was established in 1946. In particular the ISO 9000 series of standards has attracted great attention on a global scale. A board under the Quality Council of India (QCI), namely, the National Accreditation Board for Hospital and Health Care Providers (NABH) was established in India to implement an accreditation program at healthcare organizations.
Health quality in the healthcare system means patients are treated to a high standard, hospitals have competent and capable medical staff and organizations that focus on improving their outcomes. Patients must receive clear education and communication, and their satisfaction should be regularly assessed. This approach helps patients make better healthcare decisions.
The main function of any quality system in healthcare is to satisfy the needs of patients. A quality system in a healthcare organization allows the standardization of clinical and administrative systems whether they be systems or processes, leading to an improvement in overall hospital performance. The quality system is also a means for healthcare organizations to address patient and provider requirements.
India's healthcare system consists of government and private/corporate organizations. This initiative aligns with ISO 9001: 2008 standards for quality improvement in public health facilities India.
